Scroll Depth

Scroll depth measures how far down a page users scroll, indicating content engagement and where visitors lose interest.

Analytics
Also known as:Scroll Tracking, Page Scroll, Scroll Percentage

Scroll depth tracking measures the percentage of a page that users view by scrolling. A visitor who scrolls to 75% of page height has seen three-quarters of the content. This metric reveals engagement patterns and identifies where users stop reading.

Why Scroll Depth Matters

Page views alone do not indicate engagement. A user might load a page and leave immediately or scroll through every section. Scroll depth distinguishes between these behaviors, showing which content actually gets seen.

For long-form content like product descriptions or blog posts, scroll depth reveals whether users reach key information. If most visitors stop before seeing your call to action, repositioning it could improve conversions.

Measurement Approaches

Scroll depth is typically tracked at threshold percentages: 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. Each threshold fires an event when users cross it. GA4 includes basic scroll tracking that fires at 90% by default.

For more detailed analysis, allows custom threshold configuration. You can track specific pixel depths or additional percentage points based on your content structure.

Interpreting Scroll Data

Good scroll depth varies by content type. Blog posts typically see 50-75% as healthy engagement. Landing pages may show lower percentages if users convert before scrolling. Product pages should show high scroll depth if important details appear below the fold.

Combine scroll depth with for fuller context. Quick scrolls to 100% suggest scanning rather than reading. Slow scrolling with high depth indicates thorough engagement.

Common Benchmarks

Scroll depth between 60-80% indicates strong content engagement. Rates below 50% suggest content fails to capture interest or key information appears too late. Rates above 90% show visitors consume most content before leaving.
