Time on Page measures how long visitors spend on individual pages. It's a content engagement indicator that helps you understand whether specific pages hold attention or lose visitors quickly.
What is Time on Page?
Time on page is calculated as the difference between when a visitor lands on a page and when they navigate to the next page. This creates an important measurement limitation.
The last page problem: Analytics can only measure time when there's a next pageview to compare against. If someone reads your product description for 5 minutes and then closes the tab, that time isn't recorded. The same happens with bounces.
This differs from , which measures total time across all pages in a visit. Time on page focuses on individual page performance.
GA4 difference: GA4 uses "Average Engagement Time per Session" which measures time when your site was in the foreground. This partly solves the last page problem by tracking active tab focus.
How to Interpret Time on Page
Context determines whether longer or shorter is better.
When longer is good:
- Blog posts and articles (reading content)
- Product pages (researching before purchase)
- Comparison pages (evaluating options)
When shorter might be good:
- Checkout pages (friction-free completion)
- FAQ pages (quick answer found)
- Navigation pages (moving toward goal)
Red flags to watch:
- Very long time + high = confusion or frustration
- Very short time + high = wrong audience or poor content
- Consistent low time across all pages = site-wide engagement problem
Limitations
Time on page has several measurement gaps:
- Exit pages aren't measured - Last page in session has no recorded time
- Tab switching not tracked - User might leave tab open while doing something else
- Single-page visits show zero - Bounces have no second pageview to calculate from
- Doesn't measure attention - Page open doesn't mean user is engaged
