How to find a Shopify theme without a tool

A Shopify store names its theme in its own page source. Reading it yourself takes about a minute on a computer.

    Open the page source

    Open the store in a desktop browser. Press Ctrl+U, or Cmd+Option+U on a Mac. You can also right-click the page and choose View Page Source.

    Search for Shopify.theme

    Press Ctrl+F, or Cmd+F on a Mac, and type Shopify.theme. The line sits near the top of the page, inside a script.

    Read three fields

    schema_name is the base theme. theme_store_id links it to the Theme Store, and null means a custom or unlisted theme. name is the store’s own label.

How do I find out what Shopify theme a store uses?

Paste the store’s address into the detector above. It reads the theme details Shopify puts on every storefront page and shows the base theme, the store’s own label and the version. To do it by hand, view the page source and search for Shopify.theme, as the steps above show.

Is the theme free or paid?

Shopify makes a small set of free themes, and Dawn is one of them. Most other themes in the Shopify Theme Store are paid, with a one-time price set by the theme’s developer. The theme’s Theme Store listing shows the current price.

Why is the store’s theme name different from the base theme?

The name is a label the store picks in Shopify admin, such as “Copy of Dawn” or “Dawn - Summer 2026”. The base theme comes from the theme’s own code, so it shows what the store started from. The detector shows both.

Can a store hide its Shopify theme?

Not easily. Shopify adds the theme details to every storefront page by itself. Renaming the theme in admin changes only the label. A custom theme has no Theme Store listing to point to. A store with its own front end on top of Shopify may not load a Shopify theme at all.

Does a Shopify theme affect store speed?

Some, but what runs on top of it usually matters more. In our benchmark, the 21 themes with at least 10 stores have medians between 39 and 62 on mobile. Stores with 5 or fewer detected third-party services scored a median 74, while stores with 21 to 30 scored 44. The Shopify speed test shows what slows one store down.

Is the Shopify theme detector free?
