What a speed test should actually tell you

PageSpeed Insights hands you raw Lighthouse output. This turns it into what is slow on your storefront, what it costs you, and what to change first.

Lab test only

Your page beats the typical store in our slow-phone lab test.

The main content took 4.8 s in a test that copies a slow phone on a weak connection. Shoppers on faster phones and networks usually see it sooner.

What real shoppers get, and what the lab test says

A plain verdict from real Chrome visits when Google has them, and from the lab test when it doesn't.

How to Fix

  1. 1.Audit and remove unused apps. Each one injects its own scripts.
  2. 2.Install TinyIMG. Converts product images to WebP.
  3. 3.Defer what can wait. Chat and review widgets do not need to load first.

Shopify speed, answered plainly

Why the score moves, which apps cost the most, and what a theme can and cannot fix.

What is a good Shopify speed score?

Judge it against other stores rather than against 100. Across the 1,533 Shopify stores in our benchmark the median mobile score was 47, with industry medians running from 40 in Beauty and Personal Care to 55 in Automotive Parts. So 50 on mobile already beats about half the stores we tested, and 60 clears the median of every industry we measured. Desktop sits much higher, at a median of 65, so read the two separately rather than against each other. The full benchmark has the median for each industry.

Why is my Shopify mobile score lower than desktop?

The mobile test runs on a throttled 4G connection with the CPU slowed down, and desktop runs unthrottled. That costs more than most people expect. In our benchmark only 1% of stores passed the 2.5-second LCP threshold in the mobile lab test, against 68% in the desktop one. With real Chrome visitors across the whole store, 91% passed on mobile and 94% on desktop. Compare your mobile score to other mobile scores, not to your own desktop one.

What slows down Shopify stores the most?

Third-party script load, more than anything else. Across 1,533 stores we found that those running 5 or fewer detected third-party services had a median mobile score of 74, while the most common band, 21 to 30 services, sat at 44. Oversized images above the fold and theme JavaScript matter too, but script count is where most stores lose the points. For a walkthrough, see our site speed optimization guide.

Do Shopify apps slow down my store?

Some far more than others, which is why removing apps at random rarely helps. We measured main-thread blocking for every third-party service across 1,533 stores: showed up on 90% of them and held the main thread for a median of 486ms, while review scripts had the weakest link to a lower score of any category. The full third-party breakdown lists what each service costs, and this tool shows which ones your storefront loaded.

How does Shopify speed affect SEO and sales?

Google uses Core Web Vitals from real Chrome visits as one of many ranking signals, so passing can help, but it doesn't guarantee better rankings. Measured across the whole store, 81% of the 1,533 stores we benchmarked pass all three on mobile and 77% on desktop. On the revenue side, a Deloitte and Google study found that a 0.1-second improvement in mobile load time increased retail conversions by 8.4%.
