Conversion Rate

Percentage of sessions that result in a desired action such as a purchase, signup, or add to cart

CRO
Also known as:CR, CVR, Purchase Rate, Transaction Rate

Conversion Rate is the single most important metric in ecommerce. It tells you what percentage of sessions end in a purchase. A 1% improvement in conversion rate can mean thousands in additional revenue without spending more on ads.

What Is Conversion Rate?

Conversion rate measures the percentage of sessions where a visitor completes a goal. In ecommerce, that usually means completing a purchase, but you can track too.

The number of conversions divided by total sessions, expressed as a percentage.

In terms of conversion types, are completed purchases. Micro-conversions include things like add to cart, email signup, account creation, or wishlist adds. Tracking micro-conversions helps identify where your loses visitors.

Most ecommerce platforms report session-based conversion rate (conversions / sessions). The alternative is user-based (converting users / total users), which counts repeat visits differently. Stick with whatever your analytics platform uses and stay consistent.

Conversion Rate Formula

Conversion Rate = (Number of Conversions / Total Sessions) x 100

If your store had 10,000 sessions in a month and 250 completed purchases, your conversion rate is (250 / 10,000) x 100 = 2.5%.

You can also break this down by funnel stage:

Add-to-Cart Rate = (Add to Carts / Sessions) x 100
Cart-to-Checkout Rate = (Checkouts Started / Add to Carts) x 100
Checkout Completion Rate = (Purchases / Checkouts Started) x 100

How to Interpret Conversion Rate

Conversion rate varies by industry, traffic source, device, and product price. A 2% rate isn't inherently good or bad. What matters is whether it's improving and how it compares to your own historical data and your specific category.

Factors that affect conversion rate:

  • Traffic quality: Paid ads vs organic vs direct bring different intent levels. Email traffic converts at 2.8% to 5.3% on average, while paid social sits below 1%.
  • Device: Mobile conversion rates are slightly lower than desktop (approximately 2.87% vs 3.09%), though the gap has narrowed to about 0.2 percentage points.
  • Product price: Higher prices mean longer consideration and lower conversion rates. A $15 face cream converts more easily than a $2,000 sofa.
  • Industry: Food and beverage stores convert at roughly 6x the rate of luxury retailers. See ecommerce conversion rate benchmarks by industry for current data across 9 categories.
  • Season: Holiday periods (Q4) often see higher rates due to increased purchase intent.

Segment before comparing. Your mobile conversion rate from paid social will differ from desktop organic. Compare like with like, and benchmark each channel separately rather than relying on a single blended number.

Common Misunderstandings

  1. "2-3% is a good conversion rate." That depends entirely on context. Food and beverage averages around 6%, while luxury jewelry sits below 1%. Compare against your specific industry.
  2. "Higher traffic = more conversions." Not if the traffic quality drops. Doubling sessions from low-intent sources can actually push your conversion rate down.
  3. "Mobile should convert the same as desktop." Mobile conversion still lags desktop slightly, though the gap is much smaller than it was five years ago.
  4. "Conversion rate is the only metric that matters." Revenue per visitor matters too. A lower conversion rate with higher can mean more profit.
  5. "Industry benchmarks are targets." Your own data and trends matter more than averages. A store's channel mix can distort blended rates, making benchmarks misleading without context.
