Address Validation

Automated verification that shipping and billing addresses are real, complete, and deliverable

Checkout
Also known as:Address Verification, AVS, Address Standardization

Address Validation checks whether entered addresses are real, properly formatted, and deliverable before orders ship. This prevents failed deliveries, reduces costs, and improves customer experience by catching errors at checkout.

How Address Validation Works

  1. Customer enters address at checkout
  2. System queries address database (USPS, Google, third-party)
  3. Address compared against postal records
  4. System suggests corrections or confirms validity
  5. Customer accepts suggested address or keeps original

Types of Validation

Format validation: Checks structure (ZIP code length, state abbreviation).

Postal validation: Verifies address exists in postal database.

Deliverability validation: Confirms carriers can deliver to that location.

Geocoding: Converts address to coordinates for delivery routing.

Why Address Validation Matters

Failed deliveries cost money: Return shipping, redelivery attempts, and customer service time add up quickly.

Customer frustration: Wrong addresses mean delayed or lost orders and negative reviews.

: Invalid addresses can indicate fraudulent orders.

Common Address Issues

  • Misspelled street names
  • Wrong or missing apartment numbers
  • Outdated ZIP codes
  • Missing directional prefixes (N, S, E, W)
  • PO Box vs street address conflicts
  • New construction not yet in databases

Implementation Approaches

: Check address as customer types. Provides immediate feedback.

Submit-time validation: Validate when form submitted. Less intrusive but catches errors later.

Suggestion mode: Show corrected address and let customer choose. Balances accuracy with user control.
