Above the Fold

The portion of a webpage visible without scrolling, considered the most valuable area for key content and CTAs.

UX
Also known as:First Fold, Initial Viewport, Hero Area, First Screen

Above the Fold refers to the content visible on a webpage before any scrolling occurs. The term originates from newspapers, where the most important headlines appeared above the physical fold. In web design, it represents the initial viewport users see when landing on a page.

Why It Matters

First impressions form in milliseconds. The above-the-fold area determines whether users stay or bounce. While users do scroll, their attention concentrates on what they see first.

Placing CTAs just before the fold increases by 317%. Moving content from below to above the fold improved conversions by 86% in one . Making CTAs more legible and adding them to the first fold increased clicks by 101.68%.

What to Include

Homepage: Clear , primary navigation, search functionality, featured products or promotions, trust indicators (reviews, ).

Product Pages: Product image, product title and price, Add to Cart button, key product information, star rating.

Category Pages: Category title, filter/sort options, first row of products, .

The fold varies by device. Desktop is typically 600-800px from top, laptop 500-700px, tablet 700-1000px, and mobile 500-700px (but width constrains more). Design for multiple fold points and test on actual devices.

Best Practices

Users should understand what you offer within seconds. Place the most important elements largest and most prominent. Use one primary to avoid competing for attention. Above-fold content should load first using techniques like loading above-fold first. Hint that more content exists below without hiding the important parts.

Common Mistakes

Cramming everything above the fold overwhelms users. Large hero images with no content waste prime real estate. Primary actions should be visible immediately. Mobile has less above-fold space, so adapt content priority accordingly.

A/B test different above-fold arrangements including CTA placement, image vs content ratio, value proposition messaging, and trust badge positioning. Use tracking to understand how far users actually scroll.
