UTM Parameters

UTM parameters are tags added to URLs that track traffic sources, helping identify which marketing campaigns drive visits and conversions.

Analytics
Also known as:UTM Tags, UTM Codes, Campaign Parameters, Tracking Parameters

UTM (Urchin Tracking Module) parameters are text snippets added to URLs that tell analytics platforms where traffic originated. Originally created for ' predecessor Urchin, these tags remain the standard method for campaign tracking across all major analytics tools.

The Five UTM Parameters

utm_source identifies the platform sending traffic, such as google, facebook, or newsletter. This answers "who sent the visitor."

utm_medium describes the marketing channel type: cpc for paid search, email for newsletters, social for organic social posts. This answers "how they arrived."

utm_campaign names the specific marketing effort, grouping all related links for unified measurement. Examples include spring_sale or product_launch_2024.

utm_content differentiates multiple links within the same campaign. Use this to compare banner A versus banner B or header link versus footer link.

utm_term originally tracked paid search keywords but now often captures audience segments or product categories.

Implementation Rules

Always include source, medium, and campaign together. Missing any of these three causes Google Analytics to ignore all UTM tags on that URL.

Use lowercase consistently. Analytics platforms treat "Facebook" and "facebook" as different sources, fragmenting your data.

Never use UTM parameters on . Adding them to navigation or in-site promotions overwrites the original traffic source, making external campaigns appear less effective.

Reading UTM Data

GA4 displays UTM data in acquisition reports under traffic source dimensions. Filter by source, medium, or campaign to see which efforts generate traffic and conversions. Compare campaigns side by side to identify top performers and optimize budget allocation.
