The Car Wash Study
The classic study used loyalty cards at a car wash. One group received cards requiring eight stamps for a free wash with no stamps to start. Another group received cards requiring ten stamps but with two stamps already applied. Both groups needed eight purchases, but the group with pre-applied stamps completed their cards faster and at higher rates.
The head start created a sense of progress that motivated continued engagement, even though the actual requirement was identical.
Why It Works
Several psychological mechanisms drive this effect. makes people reluctant to abandon progress already made. The goal-gradient effect increases effort as people approach completion. Together, artificial progress places people psychologically closer to their goal, enhancing motivation.
Importantly, the effect requires a reason for the head start. Arbitrary bonuses without explanation fail to create the same motivation. Even simple reasons like "welcome bonus" or "promotional offer" activate the effect.

Welcome bonuses: Award points or stamps immediately upon signup. New members feel they have already started rather than facing a blank slate.
Tiered progress: Show progress toward next tier status, especially when members are close to advancement.
Partial achievements: Display badges or rewards as partially earned rather than fully locked.
Implementation Guidance
The head start should feel earned or reasonably granted. Unexplained artificial progress can feel manipulative. Frame initial progress as welcome rewards, promotional bonuses, or earned through signup actions.
