Click-Through Rate (CTR)

CTR measures the percentage of people who click a link after seeing it, indicating how compelling your ads, emails, or search results are.

Analytics
Also known as:CTR, Click Rate, Click-to-Open Rate

Click-through rate (CTR) is the ratio of clicks to impressions, expressed as a percentage. If 100 people see your ad and 5 click it, the CTR is 5%. This metric measures how effectively your content compels people to take action.

How to Calculate CTR

Divide total clicks by total impressions, then multiply by 100.

CTR = (Clicks / Impressions) x 100

For example, an email sent to 1,000 subscribers that receives 80 clicks has an 8% CTR. A search ad shown 10,000 times with 200 clicks has a 2% CTR.

Where CTR Applies

Paid advertising: CTR measures ad relevance and creative effectiveness. Higher CTR typically means lower cost per click in platforms like Google Ads.

Email marketing: CTR shows how many recipients clicked links in your message. It indicates whether subject lines and content drive action.

: CTR from search results reflects how compelling your titles and descriptions appear. Higher CTR can positively influence rankings.

CTR Benchmarks

Average CTR varies significantly by channel and industry. Search ads typically see 2-5% CTR. Display ads average around 0.5%. Email campaigns range from 2-5% depending on industry and list quality.

Context matters more than absolute numbers. Compare your CTR to your own historical performance and industry-specific benchmarks rather than universal averages.

CTR vs Conversion Rate

High CTR does not guarantee conversions. Users might click an appealing ad but find the landing page irrelevant. CTR measures interest; measures whether that interest translates to business outcomes. Both metrics together provide a complete picture of campaign effectiveness.
