Every WooCommerce store reaches the same fork: you need an SEO plugin, and the two most common choices are Yoast SEO and Rank Math. Both turn the basics that WordPress and WooCommerce already give you into something you can control, and either one can rank a store perfectly well.

The short answer is that Rank Math gives you more for free, while Yoast gives you the longer track record and the larger ecosystem.

This compares the two for a WooCommerce store specifically, where the differences actually show up: Product schema, sitemaps, redirects, and what each one costs once you want the WooCommerce features. We sell no plugin, so this is a straight comparison, not a pitch.

This comparison weighs the features that decide WooCommerce SEO, namely Product schema, product sitemaps, redirects, canonical handling, variation and GTIN support, setup effort, and the yearly cost for a single store, against each plugin's public pricing and official documentation in June 2026.

What a WooCommerce store needs from an SEO plugin

WordPress and WooCommerce hand you the basics, so an SEO plugin is there for the control layer, not the foundation. WordPress already generates a basic and WooCommerce outputs basic Product structured data. What you actually choose a plugin for is editable titles and meta, sitemap cleanup, richer and managed Product schema, , redirects, and keeping filtered URLs in check.

Our WooCommerce SEO checklist walks through every setting either plugin needs to get right, whichever you pick.

Yoast SEO for WooCommerce

Yoast is the long-standing default, installed on over 10 million sites, and its free version covers the fundamentals. Free Yoast gives you title and meta templates, XML sitemaps, breadcrumbs, basic schema, and its content and readability analysis, the green-light system that nudges you toward a focus keyphrase and cleaner copy.

The catch in the free tier is that you get one focus keyphrase per page, where Premium opens up related keyphrases (Yoast). The redirect manager is not in the free version either. It needs Yoast SEO Premium at $118.80 a year (Yoast).

The WooCommerce-specific features live in a separate product, Yoast WooCommerce SEO, at $178.80 a year, now sold as a bundle that includes Premium (Yoast). Free Yoast and WooCommerce can already output basic product markup, including the price and availability data WooCommerce generates.

The add-on is mainly about making that output richer and easier to manage: product identifiers and attributes, ratings, product-specific previews, cleaner product sitemaps that skip cart, checkout, and filter pages, enhanced breadcrumbs, and canonical handling for variation-heavy product pages.

So the WooCommerce-grade schema and sitemap control sit behind that paid add-on, not the basics. Yoast suits the store that wants a guided, hard-to-break setup and values having the deepest documentation in the space behind it.

Rank Math for WooCommerce

Rank Math puts more of the WooCommerce features in its free tier, and for a store that is the difference that matters. Rank Math ships a built-in WooCommerce module in the free version that outputs Product schema with brand, price, currency, and availability, adds product gallery images to your sitemap and social tags, and keeps hidden products out of the sitemap (Rank Math).

The free tier also includes a redirect manager, a 404 monitor, a schema generator that covers many types, and multi-keyword tracking, all things Yoast either charges for or does not match.

The trade-off is density. Rank Math exposes far more settings out of the box. That is useful if you know what you are doing, but noisy if you want a simpler setup. Its setup wizard still covers the important choices.

At the time of writing, Rank Math PRO is discounted to around $72 a year and renews at about $108, and it is where the deeper product data lives: GTIN and identifier management, per-variation schema, and noindex for hidden products (Rank Math).

Filtered URL handling still needs the usual canonical, noindex, and crawl-control setup, but Rank Math gives you more WooCommerce control before you pay. For most single stores the free module is enough. PRO earns its place once you need GTIN-level product data or run many sites under one license.

Yoast vs Rank Math, head to head

The split is simple: Rank Math wins on free-tier value, Yoast wins on track record and ecosystem. The detail is worth walking through, because on a WooCommerce store the differences are concrete rather than cosmetic.

Product schema

Both plugins build on the basic Product structured data WooCommerce already outputs, and both can produce valid rich-result markup. The difference is where the WooCommerce-grade fields sit. Rank Math's free module already adds brand, price, currency, and availability, and pushes GTIN and per-variation schema into PRO. Yoast keeps the richer, managed schema, including identifiers, in the paid WooCommerce SEO add-on.

Since WooCommerce already outputs basic price and availability on its own, the free-tier difference is control: Rank Math manages and extends that schema for free, where Yoast asks you to buy the add-on for the same WooCommerce-specific handling.

Sitemaps and redirects

A clean sitemap means keeping cart, checkout, account, and filtered URLs out of it. Rank Math's free module handles the WooCommerce side and excludes hidden products, and its free redirect manager lets you fix changed URLs with a 301 in a couple of clicks.

On Yoast, the cart-excluding product sitemaps come with the WooCommerce add-on, and redirects are a Premium feature. If you change product URLs often, free redirects alone can tip the decision.

Keyword and content tools

Free Yoast limits you to one focus keyphrase per page and pairs it with its readability check, which is genuinely useful for tidying thin product descriptions. Rank Math's free version tracks several keywords at once and runs its own content analysis.

Both sell an AI writing assistant in their paid tiers, Yoast AI and Rank Math Content AI, for drafting titles and descriptions, so if you produce a lot of product copy that becomes a paid-tier conversation on either plugin.

Ease of use and support

This is where Yoast pulls ahead. Its interface is calmer, the traffic-light analysis is friendly to beginners, and its documentation and support are the deepest in the category, which counts when something breaks at the worst moment. Rank Math is more capable in the free tier but asks more of you, with more toggles to understand. Pick the one that matches how much time you want to spend in settings.

What it costs over time

Free against free, Rank Math does more. Paid against paid, doing WooCommerce SEO properly on Yoast points you at the $178.80 bundle, while Rank Math PRO sits at roughly $72 to $108 a year, and agencies running many client stores get more from Rank Math's multi-site tiers than from stacking Yoast add-ons.

Neither price is unreasonable. The question is whether the free tier already covers you, and for most stores Rank Math's does.

One rule applies to both: run a single SEO plugin, never two. Yoast and Rank Math both write titles, meta descriptions, sitemaps, and schema, so running them together produces duplicate, conflicting output. Both ship an importer that migrates your settings from the other, which is the clue that you are meant to pick one.

Which one should you choose?

For a new or budget-conscious WooCommerce store, start with Rank Math's free version; for an established store that leans on documentation and the largest ecosystem, Yoast is the safer institutional pick. A first-time store owner can get solid WooCommerce SEO out of Rank Math without spending anything, and only move to PRO if GTIN data or per-variation schema becomes a real need.

The case for Yoast is steadier than it is cheap. If your team already knows Yoast, you want the deepest documentation, or you are standardizing across many WordPress sites, its maturity is worth something, though doing WooCommerce SEO properly on Yoast points you at the $178.80 bundle. Agencies running many client stores tend to find Rank Math's multi-site tiers cheaper than stacking Yoast add-ons.

Whichever you choose, the plugin is only half the job: the WooCommerce SEO checklist covers the settings to get right, and the full store audit walkthrough covers everything around them.

Other WooCommerce SEO plugins worth knowing

Yoast and Rank Math are the two most stores weigh against each other, but three others come up.

  • All in One SEO is a full-featured option with a free Lite version and paid plans from around $50 a year that include WooCommerce SEO.
  • SEOPress is the budget pick, free with a PRO tier from $49 a year that adds WooCommerce metadata and schema.
  • The SEO Framework is the lightweight, ad-free choice with a fully free core for stores that want SEO handled quietly in the background.

Any of them can do the job. The rule that decides outcomes is not which plugin you pick but whether you configure it properly, and whether you avoid running two at once. You can check what your current plugin is actually outputting with our WooCommerce SEO audit.

Frequently asked questions

Is Rank Math better than Yoast for WooCommerce?

For most stores on a budget, yes, because its WooCommerce module and redirect manager are free, where Yoast puts WooCommerce-grade schema behind a paid add-on. Yoast still wins on documentation and the size of its ecosystem. So the better choice depends on whether you value free features or institutional support.

Do you need the paid Yoast WooCommerce SEO add-on?

Not for basic WooCommerce SEO. WooCommerce and free Yoast can cover titles, meta, and basic product markup. The paid Yoast WooCommerce SEO add-on makes sense if you want Yoast's WooCommerce-specific schema controls, identifiers, product sitemap cleanup, breadcrumbs, and canonical handling in one supported package.

Can you switch from Yoast to Rank Math without losing rankings?

Yes. Rank Math ships an importer that brings your titles, meta, and settings across, and Yoast has one for the other direction. Your rankings come from the output, not the brand, so a clean migration keeps them. Test on a staging copy first and check your titles and schema afterward.

Can you run Yoast and Rank Math at the same time?

No. Both write titles, meta descriptions, sitemaps, and schema, so running them together produces duplicate and conflicting output. Pick one, and use its importer to carry settings over from the other.

Is the free version of Rank Math enough for WooCommerce?

For most single stores, yes. The free WooCommerce module outputs Product schema, manages your sitemap, and adds redirects, which covers the core of WooCommerce SEO. PRO earns its price once you need GTIN and identifier data or per-variation schema.

Does WooCommerce need an SEO plugin at all?

WordPress and WooCommerce give you a basic sitemap and basic Product schema, so a store is not invisible without one. But editable titles and meta, sitemap cleanup, and managed schema all come from a plugin, so a serious store wants one.
